Yangkaltjungkunya
This painting shows an Emu and Turkey story at the creek with the two major water places called Yankaltjunkunya. Turkey and his young son were camped in the tree (motifs on the left side), when they saw Emu approaching. Emu asked, "Why do you look after your only son this way, I don't, I killed all of mine and ate them." This was untrue, because Emu had left his children hiding in the landscape nearby, but in telling this lie, he tricked Turkey into killing his only son.Next day, the Turkey saw Emu with all his children, and the lie was exposed. A great fight with their bird claws ensued at the top of the long creek, between the two rock holes and this created the small gorge in the landscape. Finally, after much fighting, Turkey and Emu killed each other with their clawed feet, and the Emu children, seeing all the dust of the conflict, left the area quickly.Other stories associated with Yangkatjungkunya and shown in this painting are highly sacred to women. It is the artist's mother's country and also where one of her sons was born.
